When the Holidays Hurt and Heal at the Same Time

The holiday season has a way of amplifying everything.
Why This Time of Year Makes Spirit Easier to Feel
Most of the year, we’re busy. We rush, we multitask, we live by calendars and to-do lists.
But during the holidays—even if life is still hectic—our attention naturally drifts toward:
- Traditions and rituals
- Family stories
- The people who shaped us
We pull out old ornaments, handwritten recipes, and photos that have survived decades. We say things like, “Remember when she used to…” or “He always insisted on…”
That kind of remembering opens the heart. And when the heart is open, the veil between here and the Spirit world feels thinner.
It’s not that your loved ones are only around in December. It’s that you’re more likely to notice them.
How Loved Ones in Spirit May Reach You During the Holidays
Everyone receives signs differently. There’s no “right” way. But there are patterns I see over and over again in readings, especially this time of year.
Here are some ways your loved ones may be trying to say, “I’m here. I haven’t missed a thing.”
1. The Soundtrack You Didn’t Plan
You’re minding your own business—shopping, driving, baking—and suddenly a song hits you like a memory grenade.
It might be:
- A holiday song they loved (or loudly complained about every year)
- A piece of music from their service
- A song that played during a meaningful moment the two of you shared
When it shows up once, you might shrug it off. When it keeps showing up, in different places, at just the right time—that’s when it’s worth paying attention.
Spirit often uses music because it bypasses logic and goes straight to the heart. It’s their way of saying, “You’re not remembering alone. I’m right here with you.”
2. Lights, Candles, and “That’s Weird…” Moments
Holiday season is full of glow: trees, candles, window lights, menorahs, fireplaces.
If you notice:
- A particular light flickering every time you talk about them
- A candle flame dancing wildly in a still room
- A string of lights that mysteriously works, then doesn’t, then works again—especially when you’re thinking of them
Yes, sometimes it’s just faulty wiring. But sometimes, it’s not.
Spirit is pure energy. Electricity is energy. It’s one of the easiest things for them to play with. Those little “that’s odd…” moments can be subtle ways of getting your attention.
3. Nature Showing Up in Unlikely Ways
Even in the cold months, Spirit has no trouble using the natural world as a messenger.
You might see:
- A bright bird appearing in the exact moment you’re missing them
- A feather on your path when you’ve just been talking to them in your mind
- An insect or small animal that seems unusually focused on you
What makes it a sign isn’t the creature itself—it’s the timing, the feeling, the way it lands in your heart.
If you catch yourself saying, “Okay, if that’s you, I see it,” that’s usually your intuition recognizing the connection.
4. The Sense That You’re Not Alone in the Room
You’re decorating, cooking, or sitting quietly with a cup of something warm, and suddenly:
- You feel a warmth around your shoulders
- You smell their perfume, cologne, smoke, or a specific food
- You get the sense that someone just walked in behind you
You look around. No one’s there. But you know something shifted.
When Spirit steps close, they blend their energy with yours. You might feel it as a chill, a wave of emotion, a pressure on your shoulders, or a warmth in your chest. It’s subtle, but it’s real.
5. Dreams That Don’t Feel Like “Just Dreams”
Most dreams are a jumble of the day. They fade quickly and don’t make much sense.
Then there are the other ones.
You see your loved one clearly. They look healthy, peaceful, maybe younger. The conversation is simple but meaningful. You wake up remembering every detail—and instead of feeling shattered, you feel strangely comforted.
Those are often visits.
The holidays can make these visits more likely because you’re thinking of them more, and your heart is already open. It’s one of the ways Spirit can step in and give you a moment of connection that grief can’t touch.
6. The “You’ve Got to Be Kidding Me” Coincidences
You think of your loved one and, within minutes:
- You see their name somewhere random
- Someone tells a story about them out of the blue
- You hear their favorite phrase or inside joke
- You stumble on an old card, note, or photo you didn’t even know you still had
We tend to call these coincidences. Spirit calls them coordination.
They’re very good at lining things up so that you’re reminded of them at exactly the right moment. It’s their way of saying, “I’m woven into your life, not separate from it.”
7. A Calm That Doesn’t Match the Circumstances
You might be sitting in front of the tree or the candles, feeling that familiar ache, and suddenly… something softens.
The grief doesn’t disappear, but it loosens its grip. Your breathing slows. You feel held, even if you’re physically alone.
That quiet, unexplainable peace is often a direct gift from Spirit.
It’s as if your loved one is saying, “I’m okay. I’m not in pain. You’re allowed to feel moments of peace, even while you miss me.”
What Your Loved Ones Want You to Know This Holiday Season
If your heart is heavy this year, your loved ones in Spirit are not asking you to pretend you’re fine.
They’re not keeping score on how many decorations you put up or whether you host the big dinner.
What they do want is this:
- Tell the stories.
- Make (or order) the food they loved.
- Laugh when you can. Cry when you need to.
- Include them in your traditions in whatever way feels right.
They are not watching from some distant place, detached and uninterested. They are close. They are aware. They are invested in your healing.
They haven’t missed a single holiday. Not the first one without them, not the messy ones, not the years you “didn’t feel like celebrating.”
Love doesn’t expire when a body does. It doesn’t vanish with time. It changes expression.
You haven’t lost the love.
You’re just learning how to feel it in a new way.
If you want, I can now tailor this to your blog layout (headline options, subheads, CTA to book a reading, etc.), or tighten it into an email version for your list.
